In the face of adversity, truth prevails. WNYC, New York's leading public radio station, is stepping up to the plate with a major fundraising initiative. This comes in response to the previous administration's successful cuts to public media funding.
This initiative includes the annual 'Stand with Public Media' gala, a celebration honoring prominent figures. This year, the gala will recognize the incredible contributions of Stephen Colbert, the host of CBS's Late Show, and his wife, Evelyn McGee Colbert, a producer and arts advocate. Also being honored are David Remnick, the editor of The New Yorker, and Darren Walker, the president of the Ford Foundation.
And here's where it gets interesting: WNYC is also launching a powerful new tagline: 'You Can't Defund The Truth.' This message will be featured starting Wednesday, coinciding with the kick-off of their pledge drive. Generous donors will even receive tote bags emblazoned with the tagline.
The 'Stand with Public Media' gala is scheduled for Tuesday, November 18th, in New York City. The Colberts will be presented with the Cultural Advocacy Award, Remnick will receive the Media Innovation Award, and Walker will be recognized with the Philanthropy Leadership Award.
The event will be hosted by actor Richard Kind and will feature special appearances and performances by a stellar lineup, including Ben Platt (of Dear Evan Hansen and The Politician fame), Annaleigh Ashford (known for Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and Happy Face), Noah Galvin (from Theater Camp and The Real O'Neals), and classical pianist and composer Conrad Tao.
But here's a fun twist: An after-party, with a separate ticket, will be held, and Questlove will be the DJ!
Colbert's CBS show faced cancellation earlier in the year, with the network citing financial concerns. This is where it gets controversial: The timing of this decision, just days before the FCC approved a takeover by Skydance, sparked debate within the industry.
Public media nationwide is still grappling with the impact of the $1.1 billion in cuts to federal funding. The gala and fundraising campaign are vital efforts to help offset these losses, as NPR and PBS stations across the country seek ways to bridge the financial gap.
