Meet the Strib Varsity Athletes of the Week: Seven Rising Stars! (2025)

Minnesota's Rising Sports Stars: Unlocking Potential, One Victory at a Time

Seven young athletes shine in the spotlight, their talents propelling them to the top. This week's Strib Varsity Athletes of the Week feature a diverse group of students who have left their mark on the tournament scene.

Lauren Burnett, a senior at North Woods, delivered a thrilling performance in the Class 1A, Section 7 volleyball championship. With 28 kills, 20 digs, and a 90.9 serving percentage, she secured her team's state berth, a feat they haven't achieved since 2012. Coach Kaileen Redmond praises her dedication and growth.

Maddie Gullickson, a senior at Wayzata, conquered the individual cross-country state championship, a first for her. Her time of 16:54.3 was a personal record, showcasing her commitment to training. But here's where it gets interesting: Gullickson, a champion in track, had never won a cross-country title before. Her victory also contributed to her team's fourth consecutive state championship.

Charlie Loth, a junior at St. Paul Como Park, made history by winning the individual state championship and helping his team claim the Class 2A title, a first for the St. Paul City Conference. Loth's 5,000-meter race victory is a testament to his dedication.

Haden Smith, a senior at Edina, scored the lone goal in the Class 3A boys soccer state championship, securing the Hornets' first title since 2019. Smith's versatility was key, as he provided crucial assists and adapted to different positions.

Rylee Lawrence, a senior at Stillwater, scored winning goals in both the Class 3A state semifinals and finals, leading her team to their fourth state title. Her unselfish play and adaptability make her a coach's dream.

Harlow Berger, a senior goalkeeper at Mahtomedi, was instrumental in the Zephyrs' Class 2A state championship win, recording 14 saves and securing the team's 12th state title, a state record.

Izaak Johnson, a senior quarterback at Cretin-Derham Hall, dominated in the Class 5A, Section 4 championship with seven touchdown passes, earning his team a state tournament spot for the second year. Johnson's leadership and skills have set a new standard.

These athletes' achievements are a result of hard work, dedication, and a passion for their sports. And this is the part most people miss: their impact extends beyond the field, court, or track. Smith's involvement with the Edina Soccer Association's Unified Program and the athletes' overall commitment to their teams showcase the true spirit of sportsmanship.

Do you agree that these athletes' contributions go beyond their athletic prowess? Share your thoughts on how these young stars inspire others through their dedication and teamwork.
