Multiplayer is one of the biggest draws of Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time, but players have to jump through quite a few hoops to unlock co-op. There are also quite a few multiplayer restrictions in Fantasy Life i, so you may not be able to do everything you want to do with your friends after unlocking co-op in the early chapters of the story.
Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time has both online multiplayer and local couch co-op for two players on the same system, but each of these modes comes with limitations that make them less efficient than solo play. Still, grouping up with friends can make some things easier, and simple chores like gathering materials are much more enjoyable with other players.

How to Unlock Multiplayer in Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time
Online and local multiplayer are unlocked at different points of the story in Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time. Couch co-op is unlocked within the first hour of the game. After a brief cutscene involving Trip and Edward, a pop-up will inform you that local multiplayer is available. Another player can press start on a second controller to take control of Trip at any point after that.
Online multiplayer is unlocked during Chapter 3 of Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time. After investigating the depths and traveling between the past and present a few times, a guild building will be constructed at your Base Camp. The NPCs inside let you invite friends, search for online sessions, and recruit other players for various activities.
Fantasy Life i Multiplayer Restrictions
There are quite a few restrictions in place for co-op in Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time. Firstly, local co-op only lets the second player control Trip. You cannot create a second character for your couch co-op partner.
When playing online, all quest progression is halted. You can't do the main story, and you can't report to your Life Masters either. All you can do is gather resources, craft items, or explore and defeat enemies. There's also a timer that ticks down when playing online, limiting the length of play sessions.
Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time's co-op implementation may seem disappointing at first, but it becomes much less restrictive once you've gotten through most of the main story and have a few high-level Lives under your belt. At that point, you can just focus on gathering, crafting, fishing, and more.
