Conor McGregor’s UFC Return Confirmed? Coach John Kavanagh Reveals Training Plans & Ideal Opponent! (2025)

Conor McGregor's Return: A Major Update from His Coach!

It's the question on every fight fan's mind: When will we see Conor McGregor back in the Octagon? Well, his coach, John Kavanagh, has just dropped some exciting news, and it seems the 'Notorious' one is gearing up for a comeback!

Kavanagh recently shared some promising insights into McGregor's return, indicating that the Irish superstar is back in serious training. But before we get too hyped, let's rewind a bit.

McGregor's last fight was his trilogy bout against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 back in 2021. Unfortunately, the fight ended in a devastating leg injury for McGregor in the first round. This injury led to a doctor's stoppage, with Poirier declared the victor.

McGregor was slated to return last year at UFC 303 against Michael Chandler, but a setback forced him to withdraw. However, the fire still burns within him, as he's aiming to headline the White House card. And this is the part most people miss... he's fully committed to this goal.

Kavanagh revealed that his recent conversations with McGregor have been positive and direct, with the former two-division UFC champion already mapping out his training schedule. Although the excitement is palpable, the UFC will have the final say on whether he competes at the White House.

"On our end, we're 100 percent in. Absolutely. [McGregor has] asked me to basically lay out a program between now and June of how we'll ramp up our training," Kavanagh said on The Ariel Helwani Show. "He's showing up again, he's back in the gym most mornings, early, and he's having fun with it."

Kavanagh also mentioned that McGregor has already begun assembling a team of suitable training partners, both in the gym and at his house. He's clearly all in.

Who's the Ideal Opponent?

So, who does Kavanagh see as the perfect opponent for McGregor's return? If the UFC books McGregor on the White House card, Kavanagh believes Michael Chandler makes the most sense.

McGregor and Chandler have history, having been linked since coaching on The Ultimate Fighter. Their planned UFC 303 fight fell apart after McGregor withdrew. 'Iron' later fought Charles Oliveira instead.

Kavanagh believes their personalities would generate significant interest and their fighting styles would make for a fan-friendly fight.

"[Michael] Chandler has not been quiet about wanting to be that guy [who fights McGregor at the White House]. I think the matchup makes sense, I think it would be a fun one," Kavanagh said. "I'd love it. I think they have a bit of a spark between them. They some stuff together before. I think it would be a fun fight week, press conference, all of that."

A Shift in Mentality?

But here's where it gets controversial... Kavanagh has also noticed a significant change in McGregor's mindset. McGregor has openly discussed his spiritual growth in recent months, and Kavanagh has observed this shift in the gym. He noted that 'The Notorious' trains with purpose, leaving distractions behind, and even shares these experiences with his family.

"I'm not saying anything that he hasn't already said himself but he had a bit of a spiritual awakening, a bit of a journey," Kavanagh told The Ariel Helwani Show. "It's a bit of a different vibe with him, at this stage. A lot of times, he comes to gym, the family are coming down. It's bit a family day out. But yeah, it'll be interesting to see how it goes."

So, what do you think? Will McGregor's return be a triumphant one? Do you agree with Kavanagh's choice of Michael Chandler as the ideal opponent? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
