Australia's ODI squad has been dealt a significant blow as all-rounder Cameron Green has been ruled out of the upcoming series against India due to a low-grade side strain. This injury could have serious implications, especially with the Ashes series looming. Green's absence is a setback, given his recent return to competitive bowling after back surgery last year. He was set to play in the opening Shield round for Western Australia but was limited in his bowling.
Green was expected to be rested from the final ODI and the subsequent T20I series to focus on the Shield matches, preparing for the Ashes. Unfortunately, after experiencing soreness during training, he will now undergo rehabilitation, with hopes of returning for Western Australia's third Shield game.
But here's where it gets controversial... This injury raises concerns for Australia, as they were counting on Green's full fitness for the Ashes. Adding to the worry, Test skipper Pat Cummins is also uncertain for the first Test against England. Another all-rounder, Beau Webster, is also dealing with an injury.
Green's absence further depletes Australia's ODI team, especially considering his impressive performance in the last ODI against South Africa, where he scored 118 runs off just 55 balls.
And this is the part most people miss... The team is already missing key players. Captain Cummins is unavailable for the entire India series, and wicketkeeper Josh Inglis will miss at least the first two ODIs. Additionally, Adam Zampa is unavailable for the Perth ODI, and Alex Carey will miss the first ODI to focus on the Shield match as part of his Ashes preparation.
In a positive turn, Marnus Labuschagne has been called up to replace Green, showcasing his strong form with a recent century. Labuschagne was previously dropped from the ODI squad but has since performed well in the One-Day Cup.
